A self-catering cottage on the edge of a National Trust estate in West Cornwall
Accommodation: 4 bedrooms for 1 to 7 people.
Deugh an Chy is an 18th century detached Cornish granite stone cottage sitting on a quiet Cornish lane bursting with wild flowers on the edge of a village with wonderful views over open countryside much of which belongs to the National Trust owned Godolphin estate.
Set in its own enclosed garden, it is ideally positioned for exploring West Cornwall with easy access to the coastal path as well as to the sandy coves on the Lizard, St Michael's Mount and surrounding beaches on the south coast, the gourmet delights of Porthleven and the galleries and quirky shops of St Ives.
Deugh an Chy is said to mean house of welcome and we have endeavoured to do everything we can to make the cottage live up to its name from the moment you arrive.
Let me walk you through it.
Stepping through the front door (mind your head – this is one of two low lintels in the house) you enter a small hallway with a slate floor, hooks to hang your coats, with a cloakroom/shower-room on your right.
Walk straight ahead (duck again if you are tall) and you are in the spacious sitting room with comfortable sofas, a Moroccan rug on the wooden floor, a desk area and an oval table for playing games or doing puzzles. With a wood burner for cool evenings and a door to the garden and terrace.
To the left of the fireplace you enter the sunny kitchen dining room with huge glass doors on to the fabulous slate terrace and garden.
This side extension and custom built kitchen was added in 2014 when the whole cottage was refurbished – underfloor heating, a ‘bake-off’ style oven and induction hob make it a delight to use – whether you are making a pot of tea or a full blown Sunday lunch.
Double doors from the kitchen lead on to the terrace which runs the length of the house and overlooks the delightful enclosed and private garden with views across the hedge to the open fields beyond, which are part of a World Heritage Site.
The garden has plenty of places to sit and soak up the sun, read a book or watch the sunset with a glass of Prosecco.
In the kitchen are the stairs leading up to the four bedrooms and two bathrooms (one en suite).
All but the smallest bedroom overlook the garden.
Master bedroom and en-suite bathroom.
And there are the little extras that make Deugh an Chy somewhere special to visit: the Sonos music system (download the app and play whatever music you like throughout the ground floor), extra fast wifi in case you need it, boules and badminton sets (in a box in the understairs cupboard), games and puzzles for all ages in the chest in the living room and in the cupboard.
... and walks from the door to the National Trust's Godolphin House.
Or try a traditional Cornish cream tea at a nearby farm.
